Announcing: our Beautiful Creatures book discussion!

So, you’ve read all the Twilight books…three times. You’ve seen Twilight and New Moon…four times. You’ve read all the angsty Twi fanfic you can take…for now. And the Danger Magnet Eclipse book discussion doesn’t start until April. What do you do now?

You participate in the first book discussion, that’s what you do!

And which book did we pick? Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

So, before we go any further, let’s tell you why we picked this book:

The Divine Miss G:

Hey girly girls!! Is this not the most crack-a-lackin’ thing we’ve done this year?!! What do you mean it’s only the 12th day of the month? It’s still the best thing so far πŸ˜‰ But why now? Why do we need to get our minds wrapped up in yet another teenage obsession? Well, duh!! Cuz it’s going to be the most awesome book since Twilight, of course!!!

Yes yes! Tis true! I heard it through the grapevine that this book is so fabulous that it’s bound to get your heart a fluttering just like it did back in the days when you first learned who Edward Cullen was.

Oh squee squee squee!! I’m super duper excited!!! I have to admit that most of my favorite books out there are considered Teen Fic or young adult or baby porn as I like to call them. If there’s a popular youth series that’s about to hit the shelves then I want in!!

Beautiful Creatures didn’t just fall into my lap one day…well, actually, I’m still waiting for the dang thing to fall into my lap *gives postman the evil eye for not delivering on time* It was brought to my attention by the fabulous chicky known as ERIKA (you see her comment on the bliggity blog as PET PET). She called me up one day just squeeing her brains out telling me she had FOUND the next TWILIGHT.

“No way!” I gasped.

Want to know where she found it? LOL!! The day she was buying her movie tickets for New Moon she saw an article on Fandango (a movie site!!!) saying that it was going to be the next big thing since SPARKLES!!! Alrighty then!!! I immediately race to my library’s website to see if that book is in the system (Erika of course is not as cheap as me and has purchased said book) and got my name in line behind some girlies.

Then the holidays came. I got uber flustered about this and that and actually panicked that if Beautiful Creatures became available that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it because of all the hub bub that “the holiday of your choosing” was bringing me. So, I put a FREEZE on the book. This means that I just stepped out of line, let some girlies go around me, and when I unfroze it then I would be at the beginning of the line if the girly behind me already got the book. (Does that make sense?)

THEN…it happened…da da da – dramatic music…

Fragile got the book and started to squee.

WHAT?!! No no no no no!! She can NOT squee without me!! That’s just not humanly possibly and I refuse to let her become a fangirl without me πŸ˜‰ hahahaha!! I unfroze my spot in line at the library and started discussing with ERIKA about how we needed to get on the Beautiful Creatures train PRONTO before everyone and their ferret knows the story. Erika ran out and got the book. I on the other hand thought that I could wait my turn in line at the library.

I waited two days πŸ˜‰ I went to our local Wal-mart (I live near Birmingham, AL…uber BIG city!!!!) and talked to the dude that stocks the books (the actual buyer!!) and asked for my beautiful book that was going to soon make me feel those lost butterflies again in my tum tum. Guess what?!! He didn’t have it!!! (WHAT?!!!!) That’s right Girlies!! Birmingham did NOT have Beautiful Creatures but scoffity scoff scoff… Talladega did (if you’re from here you just call it Dega but lol).

What the french toast?!?!

Dega is a microscopic little town that just has a racetrack and campsites. They have a Wal-mart?

Knowing quite well that I would soon be a fangirl of this series I instructed Book Guy to order gobs!! I told him that the Twitter girls (Fragile… yeah… One person but hey… Book Guy didn’t know that hahaha) were all a buzz buzz about this book and it would soon be flying off the shelves. Book Guy got all bug eyed at me and said, “REALLY?!” and wrote it DOWN!! SQUEE!!!

You’re welcome BIRMINGHAM!! For it was little ol’ me that has supplied you with this uber fabulous book. (Oh shut-up! Yeah, I’m sure they would have gotten the book sooner or later but it’s my fantasy that I started it hahaha)

So with a huff and a puff in my step, I drove home, sat my bum down and ordered my very own copy of Beautiful Creatures online for $9 from (It’s actually more expensive in the store —just so ya know).

I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it!! I know that it’s suppose to be from a boy’s POV and based in the South. I haven’t looked into it any further because I want to be surprised πŸ˜‰

Squee squee squee!! Here’s to new obsessions and more eye rolls from the hubz!! I can’t wait πŸ˜‰

DH bought me a new Kindle for Christmas *squee* Yeah, IKR? Anyway, I was on the Amazon website cruising for books to download. While I was looking around, I found a list of the Amazon Editor’s Top 100 Picks for 2009.

There, at #5, was this interesting cover – black and purple, awesome font, scary trees. (Don’t ever let anyone tell you cover design doesn’t matter.)

When I clicked the cover, I didn’t even realize it was a YA book. I probably wouldn’t have looked at it if I’d known. (Yeah, I know I’m a Twilight freak, but I don’t usually read YA stuff.) Then the description just pulled me in. Southern Gothic. Star-crossed lovers. Did I say Southern already?

And, let me tell you, it’s so easy to buy a book on the Kindle. One click and 30 seconds later, the book was downloaded. I read the first two chapters sitting at my desk at work…you know, just to make sure the file wasn’t corrupted.

I think I tweeted something like this:

“Is it possible to fall in love with a book after only one chapter?”

I decided to email Greta to see if she’d heard of the book and wanted to read it with me. Her response? Something like:

Okay, maybe not just like that, but you get the gist. I told her I’d stop reading until she got the book. Do you know how much this is killing me?! If the postman doesn’t bring it tomorrow, I will hunt him down and shank him myself.

Then we decided that it would be terribly cool to read it with our Twitter/bloggy buddies and have a book discussion on the blog. It’s going to be epic, epic I tell you!

Beginning with a kickoff post next Thursday 1/21, we will host a Beautiful Creatures book discussion, and we would love for all our Twilight/Moonlight/True Blood/Vampire Diaries Twitter and blog friends to join us. There aren’t any vampires in this story, but we think you’ll love it just the same.

From Amazon:

Ethan Wate is struggling to hide his apathy for his high school “in” crowd in small town Gatlin, South Carolina, until he meets the determinedly “out” Lena Duchannes, the girl of his dreams (literally–she has been in his nightmares for months). What follows is a smart, modern fantasy–a tale of star-crossed lovers and a dark, dangerous secret. Beautiful Creatures is a delicious southern Gothic that charms you from the first page, drawing you into a dark world of magic and mystery until you emerge gasping and blinking, wondering what happened to the last few hours (and how many more you’re willing to give up). To tell too much of the plot would spoil the thrill of discovery, and believe me, you will want to uncover the secrets of this richly imagined dark fantasy on your own. –Daphne Durham

We are going to divide up the chapters, reading a few at a time, and we and guest posters will do weekly recaps (on Sundays) of that week’s chapters. We will also do comment recap posts each week (on Thursdays). We don’t have the chapters divided up yet or know who will post each week. We will post a reading schedule this Saturday, which gives you around a week and a half to get the book and read your chapters.

Speaking of getting the book:

– Greta bought her book on for $9.

– I (fragile) bought the Kindle book on Amazon for $9. They have the hardback for $10.52 and the audiobook on CD for $19.79.

– Cutie bought her book at her local B&N for ~$19.

So, to recap what we do know:

We’re reading Beautiful Creatures.

The reading schedule will be posted on Saturday, 16 January 2010 (that’s twenty ten, not two thousand ten *wink*).

The kickoff post will be posted on Thursday, 21 January 2010.

The first weekly discussion will be posted Sunday, 24 January 2010.

The first comment recap will be posted Thursday, 28 January 2010.

Please feel free to Tweet and post on your blogs about the upcoming discussion. We do ask you to please remember that this is an adult blog. Or, in the words of our lovely Greta:

Now remember boys and girls: this book discussion in not for you Hanny Montanny and Jonas Brother “I can’t wait to get my promise ring” LOVERS. It’s for adults only! We do not want be held responsible for corrupting your little virgin ears with our Cougar antics when we start to fan girl swoon over the delicious underage boy or when you start to shiver from hearing the profanities that fly out of our potty mouths.

That means you! Yes you!! The girl who’s wearing all the ’80s garb with the eyeliner raccoon eyes and is stuffing her mom’s bra with socks.

Go on now! SCAT!!

*looks around*

Is she gone? Well, good then. Ladies, now we can have some fun.

*runs off to stuff bra with socks*

Okay, who’s interested?

[P.S. We KNOW you’re not going to want to put the book down once you start it, so feel free to read it all in a weekend. Just make sure to re-read the chapters for each week’s discussion *wink*]

I love it! And I’m on page 207 ch 10.10 Red Sweater. This baby will be in the bag tonight, cause I can’t put it down. Thank you for telling me about it fragile and let me know what I can do to help out.

(ps I love that I spent the most! hehe Truth be told, I can’t buy a book from anywhere outside of B&N. I’ve got a problem and I’m well aware of it. I’m sure Target has got a great price as well for all those who’d rather not shop at the W. Just sayin’. *winks*)

    • LOL! I would have looked at Tar-j (as I calls it lol) but I’d have to go all the way up to Trussville lol to gets it and since my hubz broke my rearview mirror off my car (omg I’m so redneck) I got uber scared to get on the Interstate πŸ˜‰ Squue squee!! But I bet you’re rights about it! They normaly have fab deals on books and NORMALLY a bigger selecion too. Our Wally World’s baby porn selection is only like 5 feet long. (We have a small Wally World)

      • Greta, you are the bestest.
Welllll, my town is “slightly” more convenient and I should have just gone to Tar-j, but I had some gift cards for B&N from Christmas, so I honestly got the book for freeeee. Weeeeeee!

The bra stuffing is good. I made sure to stuff a few extra socks in there today to maximize the cougar. And girl, you need your book like yesterday and I can talk to you and fragile about this freaking book. I AM DYING HERE!!! lol

        Love ya!!
