Breathe Me

Breathe Me is the story that started it all. Since it’s my firstborn, I’ll always be harder on it and worry about it more than any other story that may follow. And I’ll probably always love it just a little more, too.

Summary

Deserted by her first love, Bella asks her father to move to a new town and away from memories that haunt her. She finds herself on a path she never imagined, but, when a new friendship causes her past to resurface, will she return to the life that broke her heart? Twilight/Moonlight crossover (primarily Twilight), AU, OOC, rated M for language, violence, and later lemons. E/B, Mick S. J., Charlie, and cameos by Beth and Josef.

P.S. Don’t be nervous if you’ve never seen Moonlight; chapter 6 will tell you everything you need to know.

As each chapter is published, a song for that chapter will be added to the playlist. Of all the songs so far, I’m Movin’ On still gives me goosebumps it’s so perfect for the chapter.

Buttons & Banners

The following wonderful button was made by Betti @ Betti. Music. Twilight. She is very talented and will make you a button if you’re willing to sell your soul 😉

Suzie @ Into the Land of Unicorns/Suzie’s Fan Fiction Haven made this awesome button for her blog sidebar, and I have shamelessly stolen it.

Breathe Me

I made the following banners. The first banner is the latest and includes a picture of Lake Guntersville in the background.

Feel free to use the button or banners to link to Breathe Me on either FFN or Twilighted or to this page.

What is this Moonlight you speak of?

Moonlight was on CBS for one glorious season in 2007-2008. It tells the story of Mick St. John, a vampire with a conscience, and Beth Turner, the human he loves. Mick is a private investigator in Los Angeles, and he crosses paths with Beth, a journalist for a sleazy tabloid website, who doesn’t remember her past with him. Also in the mix are Josef, a 400 year-old vampire and Mick’s friend, and Coraline, the bitch vampire who sired Mick against his will on their wedding night in 1952.

Guntersville, Alabama: Home, Sweet Home

When picking a location for Breathe Me, I had three requirements. (1) It had to be in Alabama. (2) It had to be on the Tennessee River. (3) It had be bigger than Forks, but not too big. After deciding that both my hometowns were too big, I settled on Guntersville.

In northeast Alabama, Guntersville is where well-to-do people buy lake homes and spend their off-time on the water. It’s not a big town (approximately 8,700), but it’s twice as big as Forks. Most of the city, as well as all of downtown, is situated along the main drag on the other side of the Tennessee River bridge. Beside the lake, the other main attraction is the state park, which is nestled in the woods along the lakes.

The Guntersville Police Department has, according to their website, 30 certified police officers and 10 support personnel who not only police the city but also the surrounding county. Of all the departments in North Alabama, I think they have the coolest cars.

Bella’s Education

***THIS SECTION CONTAINS SPOILERS***

Because Bella is only 18, she cannot become a certified police officer in the state of Alabama. So, after she gets her GED, she goes to community college to study criminal justice. Although it’s not named in the story, she goes to Wallace State Community College, which is about an hour away from Guntersville.

After college, Bella is old enough to attend the police academy, and, with Charlie’s encouragement, she attends the Huntsville (AL) Police Department academy. The Huntsville PD has 3 precincts, 407 sworn officers, 210 civilian personnel, and patrols an area of 194.7 square miles. The city of Huntsville has a population of approximately 175,000 and is growing rapidly thanks to the relocation of several Army commands after the lastest Base Realignment and Closure decisions.

Please take a moment to read about HPD’s fallen officers.

Mick’s Ride

When Mick leaves L.A., he leaves his 1966 Mercedes convertible with Beth. When he gets to Alabama, he finds a 2010 Jaguar XKR convertible left in the airport parking lot for him by Josef. The last car? Josef’s other car.

Mick & Beth Video

I found this great video from Moonlight episode 13, “Fated to Pretend.” YouTube has removed the sound from other postings of this clip, so, hopefully, you’ll be able to hear the audio by the time you watch.

Southernisms

***THIS SECTION CONTAINS SPOILERS***

Having lived the the South almost three years by chapter 10, Bella was bound to pick up some Southern speech patterns. I, having been born and raised in the South, did not notice, but my lovely beta, who moved to the South from the North, did. So, here are the two Southernisms she found:

  • “by God” – saying this is akin to saying “hell yeah”
  • “pity party” – feeling sorry for yourself, usually said in a self-deprecating way or by people ridiculing you

Chapter 17 Homage

The scene between Bella and Phelps in Chapter 17 is an homage to my favorite scene in one of my favorite movies, The Princess Bride:
